Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Malnutrition is a significant public health issue in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in rural areas. In Kaura Local Government Area, Kaduna State, malnutrition has been a persistent challenge, contributing to high rates of child mortality, stunted growth, and other health complications. Broadcasting, through radio and television programs, has been a powerful tool in addressing malnutrition by providing information on proper nutrition, healthy eating habits, and government interventions aimed at combating malnutrition. Public health campaigns delivered through broadcasting channels have been used to educate communities about the importance of balanced diets, breastfeeding, and the availability of food aid programs (Bello & Ibrahim, 2023; Usman & Gambo, 2024). This study examines the role of broadcasting in combating malnutrition in Kaura LGA and evaluates the effectiveness of these media campaigns in improving nutritional awareness and behaviors.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the efforts to combat malnutrition, many communities in Kaura LGA remain unaware of the proper nutritional practices and available interventions. Although broadcasting has been used to raise awareness about malnutrition, there is limited research on its effectiveness in changing behaviors and improving nutrition. This study aims to evaluate the role of broadcasting in combating malnutrition in Kaura LGA.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of broadcasting in raising awareness about malnutrition in Kaura LGA.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of broadcasting in promoting nutritional education and behavior change in Kaura LGA.
3. To identify the challenges and opportunities in using broadcasting to combat malnutrition in Kaura LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
1. How does broadcasting raise awareness about malnutrition in Kaura LGA?
2. To what extent has broadcasting been effective in promoting nutritional education and behavior change in Kaura LGA?
3. What challenges and opportunities exist in using broadcasting to combat malnutrition in Kaura LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses

2. Broadcasting has been effective in promoting nutritional education and behavior change in Kaura LGA.
3. The effectiveness of broadcasting in combating malnutrition is influenced by factors such as content quality, media reach, and community engagement.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the role of broadcasting in combating malnutrition, offering recommendations for improving the effectiveness of media campaigns in addressing public health issues. The findings will be useful for health organizations, media practitioners, and policymakers seeking to enhance nutrition awareness and reduce malnutrition in Kaura LGA and similar regions.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Kaura Local Government Area in Kaduna State and focuses on the role of broadcasting in combating malnutrition. It does not include other forms of media or other regions of the state.
